Wilderness is known as a place that will hold a very large swell and works well with swell directions from west northwest (more lefts) to north northeast (more rights).  It is very protected from the wind and blows side offshore even with the standard northeast trade wind.  Wilderness produces a wave that has a very long ride and can be considered playful except when it is overhead.  Once it reaches this size, it can be very hollow.  It is a great wave for a longboard in all conditions.  There is a channel to paddle out which becomes a necessity when it gets big.
